A Birthday Dream Funded Through Goal-Based Investing: My Diamond Bangle Story

A diamond bangle, a five-year plan, and one disciplined investment decision. This personal journey shows how patience through market volatility, clear financial goals, and timely action turned a modest Tata Motors investment into a meaningful birthday milestone, without chasing the perfect market top.

In 2018, I planned to buy a diamond bangle for my 50th birthday in 2023. Since the goal was five years away, I decided to start planning early and allocated ₹1.3 lakh towards this dream.

As a financial professional working in direct equity and mutual funds since 2008, I wanted to explore whether disciplined investing and patience in the stock market could help me achieve this goal.

After studying the market and considering the investment horizon, I selected Tata Motors for this goal.

At that time, Tata Motors was trading around ₹270, and I gradually accumulated shares over time instead of investing everything at once.

My investments in Tata Motors

  • 325 shares at ₹273.30 on August 21, 2018

  • 100 shares at ₹175.75 on February 5, 2019

  • 100 shares at ₹134.60 on July 31, 2019

  • 100 shares at ₹103.75 on July 24, 2020

Rather than worrying about short-term price corrections, I used market declines as opportunities to average my purchase cost.

My 50th birthday arrived on July 27, 2023.

I visited Tanishq and selected a diamond bangle worth around ₹2 lakh. I purchased it using my credit card and, on the same day, sold 300 shares of Tata Motors at ₹640.60 to fund the purchase.

Although I believed the stock had the potential to move even higher, I reminded myself of the original purpose of this investment, achieving my financial goal.

Instead of trying to predict the perfect market top, I sold only the quantity required to meet my objective and retained the remaining shares.

That evening became even more special as I celebrated my birthday wearing the bangle with my loved ones.

Later, I gradually sold part of the remaining holdings at higher prices:

  • 50 shares at ₹937.70 on February 6, 2024

  • 100 shares at ₹971.35 on April 18, 2024

Subsequently, after the demerger, I received equal quantities of shares in the newly formed entity while Tata Motors’ structure changed. This is additional benefit.

As market prices corrected after the demerger, I again saw an opportunity and rebuilt my position:

  • 50 shares at ₹362.25 on November 21, 2025

  • 100 shares at ₹350.85 on December 19, 2025

  • 150 shares at ₹372.74 on January 5, 2026

Looking back, the journey taught me an important lesson.

An initial investment of approximately ₹88,822 in 325 shares eventually helped me generate nearly ₹1.92 lakh by selling only 300 shares to fulfil a personal dream.

More importantly, this experience reinforced that investing is not just about returns, it is about purpose, discipline, and patience.

Key Lessons from This Journey

  1. Set financial goals well in advance.

  2. Avoid panic during market corrections.

  3. Use market declines wisely to accumulate quality investments when aligned with your risk profile and plan.

  4. Stay committed to your financial goal instead of reacting emotionally to market movements.

  5. Sell based on your objective, not market noise.

  6. Be patient and rebuild positions when opportunities arise.

For me, this was not just a jewellery purchase. It was a reminder that disciplined investing, patience, and clarity of purpose can turn financial goals into memorable life moments.
